Kandel election win

UMP candidate, Benoit Kandel, has been declared the winner of a partial cantonal election in Nice. The former gendarme received almost 60% of the vote to defeat his opponent Frederique Gregoire-Concas. Mr Kandel will be officially welcomed to the Conseil General this morning.

Motorcycle event crash

A young motorcyclist from Nice was injured during a rally. The 24-year-old a member of the Moto-Club de Nice received head injuries when his machine left the road at Sospel during a time-trial. He was taken to hospital in Nice after plunging around five metres of the road.

Swimmer saved from sea

A 48-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after being rescued from the sea off Menton. The man got into difficulties around 9 o’clock yesterday morning off the Fossan beach. He was pulled from the water by a passerby, and revived by a volunteer fireman.

Gasquet positive test

French tennis player Richard Gasquet has admitted testing positive for cocaine, but insists he will clear his name. The 22-year-old, who could face a two-year ban from the sport, failed the test at the Miami Masters in March. In a statement the French Tennis Federation said it was "very surprised" by the news.

Formula One - Jenson Button will come to the Monaco Grand Prix with a healthy lead in the drivers’ championship after taking the chequered flag in Barcelona on Sunday. Button led home a Brawn GP one two with teammate Rubens Barrichello finishing second. Mark Webber in the Red Bull came home in third.It was another bad weekend for Ferarri. Kimi Raikonnen was out of the points again after having to retire with a hydraulic problem while Felipe Massa slipped to sixth when he was forced to go into fuel saving mode when a pit stop problem resulted in not enough fuel going into his car.McLaren are also in poor shape with Heikki Kovalienen retiring after just 7 laps and Lewis Hamilton finishing 9th.Button leads the drivers’ championship with 41 points from Rubens Barrichello who’s got 27.Sebastien Vettel has 23 points with Red Bull teammate Mark Webber on 15 and a half.

Football - Manchester United are closing in on the defence of their English Premier League title. Meanwhile, tonight Newcastle face Middlesboro in a relegation 6 pointer at St James Park.Middlesboro are second from bottom with Newcastle one place above them. They’re both on 31 points along with the bottom club West Bromwich Albion who won on Saturday to close the gap. A win for either club tonight could lift them out of the relegation zone with Hull City dropping into it. The Championship play of semi final second leg game between Sheffield United and Preston is on tonight at Bramall Lane.The score is tied at one all from the first leg.

Cricket - Ian Bell and Ryan Sidebottom have been added to the England squad for the second test against West Indies which starts in Durham on Thursday. Monty Panesar makes way for Sidebottom while Bell is rewarded for some good early form in the county championship.England won the first test at Lords by 10 wickets.

Cycling - Belgian Tom Boonen looks set to be banned from this years Tour de France after testing positive for cocaine. Boonen who won the Paris Roubaix race last month also tested positive for the drug last year.His team Quick Step say the news is embarrassing and Boonen clearly needs help.
Golf - Henrik Stenson of Sweden has won the Players Championship at Sawgrass by 4 strokes. The Swede hit 6 birdies in a final round of 66 to end on 12 under par.England’s Ian Poulter finished second on 8 under.

An airline catering exclusively to furry passengers takes to the skies this July with a promise to make air travel everything the domestic animal could want. The first Pet Airways flight will depart July 14 from Teterboro, a small airport outside New York, en route to Washington, Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles, said founder Alysa Binder. Flights, which will cost 149 dollars each way, will be on a modified Beechcraft 1900 supplied under contract with Suburban Air. The plane usually fits 19 passengers. This time there will be room for 50 cats and dogs.
